At the celebration of Corpus Christi on Thursday, I was reminded of the beautiful and moving hymn ‘Ave Verum Corpus’:
Ave Verum Corpus natum de Maria Virgine. Vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine: Cuius latum perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine. Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. O Iesu dulcis! O Iesu pie! O Iesu, fili Mariae. Miserere mei. Amen.

Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, truly suffering, sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose pierced side flowed with water and blood: May it be for us a foretaste [of the Heavenly banquet] in the trial of death. Oh dear Jesus, Oh merciful Jesus, Oh Jesus, son of Mary, have mercy on me. Amen.
(A particularly gorgeous version is one set to music by composer Mychael Danna, and sung by soprano Kenan Burrows. It was recorded in 1997 at The Priory, Church of St. Mary and St. Blaise (Boxgrove, East Sussex) with). Highly recommended and well worth seeking out).

ReplyDeleteYes, Corpus Christi is rather a chore for those of us blessed with the Sacristanship of great institutions. But always worth it.
ReplyDeleteFairly hard work for the Priests of such institutions too!
